FAQ’s

What should I look for when hiring a painting contractor / company?

There are several key indicators to look for when choosing your Painting contractor, keep in mind your house is your most valuable asset in most cases.  At the least I would check if they are licensed with QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission) and check if they are capable of completing the project required by searching online to see if they have reviews from local and or previous clients. I would also take into consideration their professional attitude and punctuality to quote and reply. Warranties, Public Liability insurance and also the support they have from the local major paint shops. You can always call your paint store and ask them for a professional reference.

Why do you use Water based enamels?

Water Based enamel dries quick (as quick as half an hour in some cases) so the recoat time is a lot faster. It is also very durable and low in VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) so it is much better for the environment. It also does not yellow over time so bright whites stay white.  Clean up is a lot easier as well.

Are you a reputable structured painting company, a one-man painting team or a small painting team?

AJ’s Painting Townsville has been operating since 2010. We have at any time employed by us one director (myself) two admin staff, One operations manager/quality assessor 3-4 project supervisors (on site/on tools) and 2-3 tradesman on each project supervisors team, we also have one apprentice and work with local schools with work experience programs. We also have a couple of guys that are dedicated to the smaller jobs and touch ups (one-man crews)

What is the benefit of using a structured painting company?

A structured company like AJ’s Painting Townsville has its benefits. There is always a supervisor on site to talk to, and there is always a tradesman on site completing the work. Other smaller crews may have to leave their tradesman unsupervised so they can do quotes or finish other jobs. We also have our operations manager/quality controller whos’ sole job is to visit each job every morning and make sure everything is perfect. He also does all the deliveries so our guys can keep moving forward with the projects, and on the last day he will check over the entire job before we  leave and mark any defects or impurities that or team needs to tend to, Anthony is always available for updates questions and does follow ups to ensure nothing has been missed.

AJ’s Painting Townsville have the capabilities with a large team to get jobs done much quicker, inconveniencing your personal space for days less.

Summary Our work is always progressing forward. We don’t need time off your project to get more supplies or do quotes. Quicker completion. Triple checked quality.  And follow up calls. Our goal is to obtain positive reviews always so we will always be out to impress and please your needs.

Can we Paint one or two rooms at a time for convenience?

Yes, we can however it is in the best interest for both yourself, and us to complete the works required as quickly as possible. Painting one room at a time will take days longer than our systematic approach, sheeting and protecting the entire house and completing all ceilings as well as undercoating all doors and frames on the first day is our go to, followed by a day finishing walls and a day to gloss doors and trims. Usually in most cases we can complete a full internal repaint to very high standard in three days depending on the layout of the house. As you could imagine that would only be two nights out of place with most of your home sheeted up.

How can I save money on my painting project?

You can remove all blinds and curtains as well as their brackets for us and replace them when we are finished if you like. Just number them with some masking tape and a pen starting from the front door working your way around the house perimeter one direction, numbering from one to whatever depending on how many windows / curtains you have. Also be sure to take care of them so as not to crease or damage them, Not painting inside of cupboards is another great way to save good amount of money,

Moving your furniture away from the walls 1.5metres without putting them directly under lights or fan is good too. If you need help with a few things that is fine.

Basically, anything that we need to spend time on moving or removing is going to save you money, if we remove all the curtains and blinds and move all the furniture this will be a few hours of labour by the crew.

We do offer these services included for pensioners or the frail free of charge.

Don’t try to save us work by doing some preparation or plastering as most of the time we will only have to fix it, besides we already include it in our price.

Can AJ’s Painting Townsville make my painting quote cheaper?

We don’t believe upselling to make profit on extras.  We believe on supplying you with a painting finish that suite your personal requirements.  We don’t to try to upsell you with feature walls that are unnecessary and cost several hundred dollars each.

Another great way that we keep our prices lower is we recommend not painting inside your cupboards if they don’t need it as they are always closed and full of personal items.  Cupboards can be anywhere from $80 to $150 each.  Which you can imagine would add up over a whole house.

Do you recommend painting feature walls inside my house?

Majority of the time AJ’s Painting Townsville would not recommend feature walls.  Most of our houses in our area don’t have larger spaces to accommodate a bold colour changed feature wall.  If a feature wall used in the wrong space can cause the room to appear smaller or closed in.  AJ’s recommends purchasing some nice large artworks for a couple of hundred dollars as you can change art when you like and a feature wall is usually around $300.

What can I do to help make the project go more smoothly?

Our main goals is to complete your project with as little disruption to your life as possible. Before your project starts we will provide you with a list of things that you can do to help us to complete your project as quickly and smoothly as possible

Who will be there to answer my questions or to address any concerns I may have throughout the project?

Maintaining open line of communication with you is very important to us. Your project manager should be able to answer all questions but please feel free to contact either the our Operations Manager or Anthony himself or contact our office staff at any time to address concerns or answer any questions you may have whatsoever.

Do we need a Plasterer to fix any minor dents, dings, holes or cracking?

AJ’s Painters include all minor defects in our painting procedure. We have plasterer that work with us in our crew that can tackle any major works like cracks, holes, sheet section replacement or expansion joints.

How do you determine the amount you will charge for my painting project?

The first thing we need to do is find out exactly what results our clients are after.  The reason for painting, their desired outcome and their expectations.  All these things matter when compiling our quote. There are different levels that we can finish at depending on what is required. All our quotations are measured by time to complete the tasks or the measurements of the project.

Why is it important to measure a job and not just walk around and estimate in your head?

When we measure a painting project, we ascertain the precise square meters of all painted surfaces, as well as the number of doors and frames.  This measurement tells us how long the job will take and it also tells us how much paint we will need to complete your Painting project. With AJs Painting Townsville there is no guess work, we know we can finish the work with the price we have quoted and within the time we allow. Some painters will just walk around a project and add up in their head or guess price outcomes.  This is a more risky way of quoting and prices can often come in cheaper, the risk with this kind of quoting is that if they have quoted too cheap they will rush the job towards the end finding shortcuts to try and make a profit and leaving the finish less than satisfactory.

Why do we believe that a 5 star google or face book review is so important to our business?

Genuine reviews from happy clients or customers are the most effective way of encouraging word of mouth sales and install confidence in our future clientele.  To AJs Painting Townsville one good review is as good as 10 solid leads.  We will do everything in our power to ensure every customer is completely satisfied with our service. How to test if paint is oil or water-based?

First, clean a small area of the painted surface. Then soak a cotton ball, Q tip or soft rag in methylated spirits and rub the area you want to test, if paint comes off onto your rag it’s water-based paint. If not, its oil based. In either case, proper prep is key for a long lasting finish.

How do I know if a painter isn’t seasoned or experienced enough to provide a professional time efficient outcome?

First impressions are usually a great indication, phone mannerism from first point of contact, ability to secure a quote time and be punctual to the quote appointment.  If they are late for your appointment do they let you know?  Do you have to call them to let them know that they didn’t show up and try to reschedule?  How do they present themselves to the quote?  Do you feel comfortable with the person supplying you the quote?  Do they offer advice or suggestions on how to accomplish what you are after to the budget that you have or do they try to upsell you?

What is Elastomeric?

Elastomeric paint is a high build coating that is designed to protect masonry surfaces. These coatings help protect your rendered walls from wind driven rain, and can create a waterproof system if applied correctly.  Certain elastomeric coatings are known to stretch and contract up to 3 times the applied thickness of the coating.  This system can be perfect for bridging smaller cracking on rendered walls showing signs of minor movement.  Regular paint systems do not have the same elastomeric properties and will just crack with the movement of the wall.

How long will it take to paint my house?

Any given property usually takes between 2 and 4 days whether it be internal or external, depending on the amount of tradesman on the project and the complexity of your home or project.

Will you complete my job in a timely manner without interruption?

Yes.  AJs Painting Townsville is a structured company and we have operations managers and project managers in place to do any necessary running around or delivering or quality control, which allows our tradesman to stay onsite and continue progressing forward with your home or project.

What are different paint sheens?

Sheen refers to the light reflectivity of the painted or varnished surface. There are varying degrees of sheen, from no sheen to high gloss. Though some paint manufacturers may refer to their paint sheens by different names, generally, from lowest to highest, paint sheens correspond to these reflective degrees:

  • Flat finish
  • Washable paints
  • Lowsheen finish
  • Satin finish
  • Semi-gloss finish
  • Gloss finish
  • High gloss finish

What are the advantages of flat and lower sheen paints?

Both flat and lowsheen provide even light reflection and give the surface a softer, more uniform look.  The higher glosses highlight surface imperfections.  They are much less likely to show lap marks or roller marks, so they are generally easier to apply and touch up than higher sheen paints and appear more uniform along light walls such as hallways.

What are the advantages of washable paints?

Washable paints have better stain resistance, so they resist dirt pick up and stay cleaner longer.  They have better scuff and wear resistance, so they’re good for high traffic areas and on surfaces that are handled, washed or scrubbed frequently.  Washable paints have better moisture resistance, which makes them ideal for surfaces and areas that are frequently exposed to high humidity levels.

When choosing a washable paint try to choose one on the lower sheen side of the scale as it won’t highlight imperfections as much as the glossier sheens.

What are the disadvantages of higher sheen paints?

They tend to highlight any surface imperfections. They are harder to touch up than lower sheen paints, because the higher sheen tends to highlight the different application methods between the original main wall rolling or brushing and a touch up with a different tool or a different pattern left by different stroke directions.

They usually need to be sanded, de-glossed and, or primed prior to repainting, to ensure good adhesion of the new paint.

What colour should I choose?

AJ’s Painting Townsville normally start our colour consultations with clients looking at standard colour charts. Interior colour selection charts can be a very helpful starting point as they generally use the more common colours and have some photographs of the contrasting colours at use in a finished room scenario. The exterior paint colour chart will also have a nice variety of harmonious colour combinations to choose from.

Another good way to get started on a colour selection is to take a look at our web site’s photo gallery INSERT LINK TO GALLERY.  This will give you some idea of what the final look of your home might look like and, we have Records for most of the colours that were used in our photographs.

You may also want to drive around the neighborhood and find similar houses similar to yours to see what others have done with colours. We may be able to help you with colour matching if you send us some digital photos or the address of the house colours you like, and we can politely speak with the owner about us retrieving a colour match from their home.

Does AJ,s Painting Townsville provide a free colour consultation?

Yes we do, We Provide a free colour consult And after accepting our quote we can provide colour samples to test on you home.

Do I need to move everything from the rooms before you paint?

Please move all small items, remove pictures from walls and store breakables. You can move furniture 1.5 metres off the walls to reduce labour costs if you choose.

How will my personal property be protected from paint?

On interiors, after you have removed your delicate items, all areas or remaining items, will be covered with clean drop cloths or plastic sheeting. On exteriors, shrubs and surrounding areas will be protected so that no evidence of paint splatter or paint peelings remains.
